This course focuses on designing school curriculum and instructional strategies and examines the history of curriculum development. The social impact on curriculum is addressed, as well as the importance of national and state standards in curriculum development.

Topics and Objectives

Historical Perspective of Curriculum Development

  • Describe curriculum development from an historical perspective.
  • Examine the stages of curriculum development.

Approaches to Curriculum Development

  • Compare and contrast constructivist and traditional approaches to curriculum development.
  • Describe different theories that have played a part in the development of curriculum.

Curriculum and Social Change

  • Examine social adaptation, social revisionism, and social criticism.
  • Evaluate the effect school reform has on curriculum and instruction.
  • Analyze curriculum presently being used in the school setting.

Implementing Curriculum in the Classroom

  • Describe long-range, unit, and daily planning.
  • Examine different methods of assessments.

Reform and National and State Standards

  • Examine three reform movements.
  • Compare and contrast curriculum guides to state and national standards.

Curriculum Materials for the Classroom

  • Examine issues to consider when selecting curriculum materials for the classroom.
  • Describe the textbook selection process.
  • Analyze ways to adapt technology use in the classroom.
  • Compare and contrast different units researched on the Internet.
