Communication Techniques for Educators and Administrators

This course is designed to help educators and administrators develop effective interpersonal, group, and public communication skills. Strategies and techniques presented will include one-on- one interaction, organizational teamwork, strategies for conducting productive meetings, public presentation, and speaking styles. Emphasis is placed on communication with parents, teachers, the governing board, the superintendents, and the community.

Topics and Objectives

Classroom Communication

  • Define the communication process.
  • Differentiate between a supportive and defensive classroom climate.
  • Examine communication competencies for teachers.
  • Analyze the effect of classroom diversity on communication.

Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

  • Explain the process of perception.
  • Analyze the importance of perception in the classroom.
  • Explain the functions of verbal and nonverbal communication in the classroom.
  • Examine the relationship of teacher nonverbal behavior to teacher effectiveness.
  • Analyze effective listening skills.

Instructional Strategies

  • Explain the significance of clarity in classroom communications.
  • Analyze cultural variations in learning styles.
  • Compare and contrast instructional strategies.

Communication Concerns

  • Examine areas of communication concerns in schools.

Ethical Behavior in the Classroom

  • Examine the relationship between ethics and the role of the teacher.
  • Analyze the process of ethical decision-making.
  • Identify ways to handle disruptive students.
