Web Authoring for Educators

This course provides teachers, trainers, and other educators with fundamental knowledge of Web construction. Students explore Web content theories and apply them directly to educational projects. Students will use a variety of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) editors to create material appropriate for educational settings. Students will research educational Web related issues and implement the knowledge gained when designing Web sites.

Topics and Objectives

Web Page Basics

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the terminology specific to the Internet.
  • Identify the basic steps in creating a Web page using a Web authoring software package.
  • Apply organizational strategies to name files and folders in creating Web sites.
  • Analyze selected implementation issues related to Web sites.

Web Page Design Issues

  • Describe basic design principles as they pertain to Web sites.
  • Distinguish components of effective Web sites.
  • Examine a variety of navigational components for Web sites.
  • Plan a Web site implementing successful design principles.
  • Design a basic flowchart.

Web Page Development

  • Compare and contrast image resolution and color selection.
  • Examine graphic file formats.
  • Analyze sources of graphics and multimedia that can be used for Web sites.
  • Identify processes to prepare graphics for the World Wide Web.
  • Use a Web authoring tool to create a Web site.

Web Page Enhancement

  • Examine typography basics.
  • Demonstrate advanced guidelines in Web page design.
  • Describe various applications that enhance Web sites.
  • Incorporate multimedia elements into Web pages.

Web Site Management

  • Identify the process to upload a Web site to a server.
  • Examine methods of having a Web site listed by selected search engines.
  • Apply procedures to test Web sites.
  • Modify Web sites based on test results.
