Course Description

This course is designed to focus baccalaureate students on the behaviors, attitudes, and values necessary for theory-based professional nursing practice. Concepts of professional nursing are presented within the unifying framework of Jean Watson's Theory of Caring.

Topics and Objectives

Essentials of Professional Nursing Practice

  • Identify personal and professional behaviors, attitudes, and values relating to patients and health care providers
  • Discuss the scientific basis of nursing knowledge through the nursing process

Integration of Theory into Nursing Practice

  • Define the major concepts essential to nursing theories
  • Identify the purpose and use of nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes

Nursing Philosophy, Models, and Theories

  • Define the relationship between nursing philosophies, models, and theories
  • Examine the major nursing theories and their key concepts

Watson's Theory

  • Examine Watson's theory in relation to behaviors, attitudes, and values of professional practice
  • Integrate Watson's theory in relation to patient or community care

Development of Future Nursing Theory

  • Discuss the past, present, and future impact of nursing theory on nursing practice
