This course explores definitions of giftedness, ways of identifying gifted students, and types of programs developed for this population. It addresses issues in educating the gifted and introduces concepts that apply to gifted endorsement.

Philosophical, Historical, and Legal Foundations of Special Education of the Gifted

  • Summarize the major contributions to the field of gifted education.
  • Analyze national, state, and local definitions of giftedness and mandates for service.

Characteristics of Gifted Learners

  • Differentiate between above-average students, gifted students, and highly gifted students.
  • Distinguish characteristics of gifted learners in various domains.
  • Compare and contrast positive and negative characteristics of the gifted.

Current Theories of Giftedness

  • Compare and contrast the various theories of giftedness.

Assessment and Identification of the Gifted Learner

  • Recount methods used historically and currently in identification of gifted students.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of identification measures for diverse populations.

Instructional Content and Practice

  • Distinguish between objectives and practices for regular education and gifted education.
  • Explain the importance of creativity in planning gifted instruction.
  • Analyze instructional materials available for gifted students.

Planning and Managing the Teaching and Learning Environment

  • Analyze the various service delivery/program options for gifted education.
