Course Description

This course provides students with insight into the management of an organization's strategic project portfolio. Students will learn the value of aligning a project's goals and objectives with the organization's strategies and stakeholders' interests. In addition, this course will illustrate how project teams are used to accomplish continuous improvement and to facilitate change within the organization. Students will also examine the characteristics of global and virtual project management.

  • Describe project management's value to an organization.
  • Explain the characteristics of a project portfolio.

Strategic Context of Projects

  • Examine various organizational strategies and tactics used to manage projects.
  • Describe the relationship of project management related to organizational strategies.
  • Analyze project selection criteria in the context of strategic management.

Stakeholder Management and Strategic Issues

  • Differentiate among various organizational structures and governance, and their impact on project management.
  • Analyze the role of sponsorship and support in relationship to project management.
  • Explain the importance and implications of stakeholder management.

Project Management Operations and Improvement Strategies

  • Examine various project team strategies.
  • Describe the impact of change management strategy projects.
  • Examine project management (process improvement) methodology.

Global and Virtual Project Management

  • Differentiate the characteristics of global and domestic project management.
  • List the challenges of virtual project management.
  • Identify effective techniques for virtual project management.
