Course Description

This course examines the design and management of internal capacity as it applies to all organizations. It examines the principles and techniques for designing, analyzing, and managing operations processes. It addresses how all operations and behavior components fit together and how to identify and resolve the right problem. Topics include statistical process control, supply chain management, and total quality management.

Overview of Operations Management

  • Define operations management.
  • Analyze the components of the supply chain.
  • Inspect the roles of stakeholders in the supply chain.
  • Analyze ethics choices faced by operations managers.

Business Process Improvement

  • Evaluate the operating efficiency of existing business processes.
  • Investigate alternative business processes (finance, customer service, IS, legal and ethical).
  • Integrate quality management philosophies.
  • Select an appropriate business process to improve operating efficiency.

Capacity Planning

  • Determine existing capacity in a given organization.
  • Compare and contrast forecasting methods.
  • Explain how to forecast demand under conditions of uncertainty.

Performance Excellence

  • Identify quality or performance standards in a given industry.
  • Create quality or performance standards for an organization.
  • Select the appropriate technological application for attaining competitive advantage using cost-benefit analysis.

Supply Chain Management

  • Identify the existing supply chain management processes within an organization.
  • Compare and contrast domestic and global supply chain practices.
  • Recommend a supply chain based on cost-benefit analysis.
  • Analyze the ethics implications of competing operations strategies.

Technology Applications

  • Evaluate emerging technology trends in relation to existing organizational infrastructures.
  • Determine requirements for the selection, acquisition, and implementation of appropriate resources to support organizational strategies.
