Methods of Teaching Elementary Mathematics

This course focuses on the methodology and assessment strategies that enhance learning in elementary mathematics. Topics include an overview of mathematics content and process standards, developmentally appropriate instructional strategies, assessment, and classroom and materials management.

Mathematics Content and Process Standards

  • Identify the content and process standards in P-8 mathematics.
  • Apply national and local mathematics standards to instruction and assessment.

Recognizing Patterns

  • Describe the importance of pattern recognition in understanding mathematics.
  • Demonstrate the use of manipulatives to teach recognition and extension of patterns.

Problem Solving and Reasoning

  • Analyze the process for successful problem solving.
  • Analyze strategies for facilitating problem-solving activities.
  • Create activities designed to help students develop reasoning and logic skills.

Number Sense

  • Explain the concept of number and number sense.
