Information Technology in School Library Media Centers

This course is designed to provide an overview of technology and its applications in the school library setting. Students will develop an understanding of computer networks in libraries, library automation software, and Web applications for information retrieval. Students will explore acceptable use policies for technology, technology standards for students and teachers, and emerging trends in library technology.

Topics and Objectives

Introduction to Computer Systems

  • Identify major aspects of educational computer environments.
  • Assess impact of computer technology in the K-12 educational environment.
  • Describe the role of computer technology in the modern library.

National and State Technology Standards for Schools

  • Identify sources of national standards.
  • Describe standards for relevant states.
  • Analyze impact and relevance of standards.

Networking Basics

  • Describe the differences between Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).
  • Identify fundamental networking hardware such as servers, routers, and hubs.
  • Define the role of the Internet as a "network of networks."

Integrated Library Systems

  • Describe the roles of the integrated library system.
  • Identify major vendors of integrated library systems.
  • Compare and contrast commercial integrated library systems with home-grown and open-source alternatives.
