Health and Nutrition for the Classroom Teacher

This course provides a study of health and nutrition education for the classroom teacher. There are three workshops that address the areas of nutrition, sexually transmitted diseases, cardiovascular health, and the physiological and sociological effects of alcohol, narcotics, drugs, and tobacco use.

Topics and Objectives

Nutrition

    Identify the history, purpose, and scope of health education. Identify the nutritional needs of a school-aged child. Describe the effects of nutritional deficiencies on growth, development, and the learning process. Analyze the development of the federally funded school-lunch programs, their nutritional requirements, and their impact on educational achievement. Analyze the impact of eating disorders on the learning process and classroom behavior.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

    Identify local, state, and national incidences of sexually transmitted diseases. Analyze sociological attitudes as they relate to increasing incidences of sexually transmitted diseases. Identify attitudes towards sex education in the public school system. Analyze the effectiveness of sexually transmitted disease prevention programs.

Cardiovascular Health

    Identify the interrelationship between the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Describe the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. Identify the rationale and purpose for performing CPR. Physiological and Sociological Effects of Alcohol, Narcotics, Drugs, and

Tobacco Use

    Compare and contrast theories of addictive behaviors. Examine sociological trends regarding drug, alcohol, and tobacco use and abuse. Identify the physiological effects of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. Identify the effects of substance use and abuse on the learning process. Analyze substance abuse prevention programs and their effectiveness with school-aged children.

Mentoring in Organizational Culture

  • Evaluate both the formal and informal methods of mentoring women aspiring towards educational leadership.
  • Develop a set of criteria and program features for formal mentoring programs in administration.

Strategies for Personal Networking and Advocating

  • Evaluate the need to network and develop a strategic plan for expanding a personal networking base.
  • Analyze the current groups that advocate for women in education and evaluate the future focus advocacy groups should take to continue to promote women in education.

Personal Mastery

  • Analyze the concept of personal leadership power and the importance of developing a confident personal self.
  • Evaluate the use of a journal as an effective professional growth tool.

Professional Career Planning

  • Analyze personal choices and purposeful career planning.
  • Develop a plan for strategic career growth.
