Foundations of Library and Information Science

This course is a survey of the practices, standards, and values of the library profession focusing on current trends. The roles and responsibilities of the school library media specialist as teacher, information specialist, instructional partner, and program administrator will be explored. Additional attention will focus on concepts of information retrieval and the ethical and legal contexts in which it occurs; as well as exploring leadership, advocacy, and partnership opportunities.

Topics and Objectives

Growth and Development of the School Library Media Center

  • Review the historical growth and development of the school library media center.
  • Discuss current trends in the school library media center.

Types of Libraries

  • Distinguish between the function and role of each type of library.
  • Identify the population served by each type of library.

Basic Terminology and Functions of the Library Profession

  • Use basic library vocabulary in its appropriate context.
  • Identify basic library functions and the relationship among them.

Roles of the School Library Media Specialist

  • Describe the duties and responsibilities of the school library media specialist.
  • Identify transformations in the role of the school library media specialist.

Standards for School Library Media Centers and School Library Media Specialists

  • Identify relevant standard-making bodies.
  • Apply relevant standards to local school environment.

Information Storage/Retrieval Models

  • Investigate various ways information is stored and retrieved.

Copyright, Ethical, and Legal Issues

  • Apply basic principles of copyright law to school library media center operations.
  • Explore the legal issues of patron privacy rights and their limits.
  • Identify ethical issues associated with school library media center operations.

Beyond the Library Walls

  • Explain what role leadership, advocacy, and community partnerships play in the effectiveness of the school library media program.
  • Identify critical populations for collaboration and interaction outside the library.
  • Describe the school library media specialist's responsibility for continuing education and professional growth.
