Course Description

This course focuses on the principles of distance education as a medium for course, degree, or training-based instruction. The history, technologies, philosophies, and best practices associated with distance learning will be presented and analyzed. Current and future critical issues that impact the teaching/learning environment in distance delivery modalities also will be examined.

History, Foundations, and Technologies of Distance Education

  • Analyze the evolution of distance education from the 1850s through the present.
  • Define the key terminology of distance education.
  • Compare and contrast the different applications of distance education and training.
  • Identify the impact of various synchronous and asynchronous systems used to deliver distance education.

Critical and Emerging Issues in Distance Education

  • Explain the emerging trends in distance education delivery.
  • Identify the common perceptions and misperceptions of distance education.
  • Examine ethical issues that arise in distance education.

Teaching and Learning at a Distance

  • Support the need for instructional design when planning a distance education course.
  • Identify teaching strategies and media that promote effective student learning in a distance environment.
  • Identify the characteristics of the successful distance learner within a given medium.
