Ethics: Health Care and Social Responsibility

Course Description

This course identifies ethical issues in health care. It is designed to encourage students to clarify their personal ethic with regard to health care issues. The various responsibilities involving the management of populations whose ethics may be divergent are identified.

Topics and Objectives

Ethical Theories, Principles, and Concepts

  • Differentiate the distinction between legal and ethical issues.
  • Identify and describe major ethical theories and principles.
  • Identify problem-solving methodology components.

Application of Ethics within Individual Organizations

  • Identify values and principles that health care organizations utilize in developing their mission statements and philosophies.
  • Describe the elements of an organization's culture and their influence on ethical decisions.
  • Analyze the role of an ethical code and the importance of the enforcement process.
  • Apply ethical theories and principles to health care situations.

Administrative Ethical Issues

  • Analyze the history of administrative ethical issues and the impact on the current health care environment.
  • Identify the roles of institutional compliance and ethics committees and review boards.
  • Describe management's responsibilities when dealing with administrative ethical issues.

Biomedical Ethical issues

  • Analyze the history of biomedical ethical issues and the impact on the current health care environment.
  • Examine some current biomedical ethical issues.

Emerging Ethical Issues

  • Integrate ethical theories and principles into a health care setting.
  • Analyze emerging future ethical issues brought about by the rapidly changing health care environment.
