Dependency and Addictions
Course Description
In this course, students will be introduced to the addictions process involved in alcohol, chemical, and other dependency areas. The role of addiction within society, the criminal justice system, and treatment areas, will be explored.
Topics and Objectives
Process of Addiction: Etiology, Stages , Models, and Risk factors
- Define and differentiate between use, misuse, abuse, addiction and dependence.
- Identify and explore the etiology and stages of the addictive process.
- Examine the models and risk factors associated with addiction theory.
- Describe other forms of addiction including gambling, sex, eating disorders, exercise, work, Internet, and relationships.
Differentiation of the Various Forms of Addiction and Dependency; Drug Classifications
- Gain familiarity with various classifications of drugs.
- Examine Jellinek's Theory of Alcoholism.
- Explore the process and tools available for the assessment of drug/alcohol problems.
- Identify the Four Perspectives on Drugs/Alcohol.
Dual Diagnosis: Definition and Treatment Issues; Co-Addiction
- Develop understanding of dual diagnosis disorders.
- Explore the role of the family in chemical dependency issues and dynamics.
Impacts of Addiction and Co-Addiction: Home, Family, Society, Personal
- Examine the impact on society of various forms of alcohol and drug abuse.
- Gain familiarity with the emotional dynamics within addicted family systems.
- Define, describe, and develop an understanding of Adult Children of Alcoholics.
Prevention, Intervention, Treatment, and Relapse Prevention Strategies
- Identify and explore the available prevention approaches to drug/alcohol problems.
- Develop understanding of and familiarity with various intervention and treatment approaches currently utilized within the field of dependency and addictions.
- Integrate the role of dependency and addiction dynamics with personal, family, and social functioning.
