Course Description

This course defines and provides a context for teaching and assessing students in the area of visual and performing arts based on scope, sequence, and national and state standards. An emphasis is placed on integrating art across the curriculum.

Topics and Objectives

Defining Visual and Performing Arts Content

  • Describe the importance of visual and performing arts in the P-8 curriculum.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary to identify and describe components of visual and performing arts.
  • Identify the national standards in movement, music, theater, and visual arts.

Visual and Performing Arts Resources and Materials

  • Identify community resources.
  • Examine electronic and print resources.
  • Analyze visual art media and materials appropriate to classroom instruction.
  • Analyze performing arts equipment appropriate to classroom instruction.

Integrating Visual and Performing Arts into the Curriculum

  • Create a lesson plan for each area of visual, movement, music, and theater arts.
  • Create a unit of study that integrates visual or performing arts with at least one other content area.
  • Create assessments that appropriately match established lesson objectives.

Integrating Visual and Performing Arts into the Classroom

  • Describe the importance of planning and preparation for visual and performing arts instruction.
  • Analyze issues of classroom management during visual and performing arts instruction.
