Advanced Nursing Management: Communities
Course Description
Students analyze the theory and role of nurses working with aggregates, including assessing communities utilizing epidemiology methods, defining and prioritizing health problems, and developing proposals for resolution of diagnosed problems. Course content is designed to build on baccalaureate education to further promote critical thinking skills necessary to perform autonomously in community health environments. Students will use the course concepts in a clinical application project. This course has a 16 hour clinical component.
Topics and Objectives
Advanced Community Health Concepts
- Apply the concept of community as client.
- Develop a theory based practice in providing culturally competent care to communities and aggregates.
Advanced Methods of Data Collection for Community Health Assessment
- Define the term "needs assessment" and analyze the different steps in this process.
- Categorize different sources of community health data.
- Analyze existing health care databases.
- Evaluate tools used for database collections.
- Identify database populations similar to project aggregate.
Use of Models in Health Assessment and Promotion
- Synthesize the model of health promotion into the practice of community health nursing.
- Apply principles of epidemiology, demography, research, and levels of prevention to the identified aggregate.
Community Health Diagnoses or Needs Statement
- Critically analyze community assessment data to determine the level of a community's health.
- Apply the Omaha System to community needs statement or community diagnoses.
- Explain the importance of working with the community to establish priority health needs.
Planning and Managing a Community's Health
- Summarize the implementation of change theory in directing the community planning process.
- Plan a community-focused health program that is directed towards one community health diagnosis.
Formulating a Community Health Program
- Formulate measurable outcome objectives.
- Determine interventions to formulate and influence policies that affect the health of a community.
- Design evaluation methodologies.
Implementing a Community Health Program
- Integrate coalition building and community partnerships into intervention strategies.
- Evaluate community resources to assist in resolution of community health problems.
- Analyze cost benefit effectiveness for community health project with detailed budget.
Overview of the Grant Writing Process
- Identify the elements of a grant proposal.
- Identify different sources for grant funding.
