Advanced Abnormal Psychology

Course Description

This course covers a wide range of definitions and models that focus on the complex or problematic psychological disorders and conditions of psychopathology. Emphasis is on learning accepted conceptualizations of such disorders along with contemporary treatment approaches. Students are introduced to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the basis of diagnosis and classification of psychopathology. Critical thinking skills are emphasized, as are multicultural, legal, and ethical issues involved in the field of abnormal psychology.

Topics and Objectives

Evolution of Psychopathology

  • Analyze the historical and contemporary views of abnormal behavior and psychopathology.
  • Assess the theoretical viewpoints and interpretations of the biological, psychosocial, and sociocultural models.

Stress/Adjustment and Anxiety Disorders

  • Evaluate contemporary research associated with stress/adjustment and anxiety disorders.
  • Describe the DSM IV-TR symptoms/criteria for stress/adjustment and anxiety disorder diagnosis.
  • Assess a variety of treatment modalities for stress/adjustment and anxiety disorders.

Mood, Somatoform, and Dissociative Disorders

  • Evaluate contemporary research associated with mood, somatoform, and dissociative disorders.
  • Describe the DSM IV-TR symptoms/criteria for mood, somatoform, and dissociative disorders.
  • Assess a variety of treatment modalities for mood, somatoform, and dissociative disorders.

Eating, Personality, and Addiction Disorders

  • Evaluate contemporary research associated with eating, personality, and addiction disorders.
  • Describe the DSM IV-TR symptoms/criteria for eating, personality, and addiction disorders.
  • Assess a variety of treatment modalities for eating, personality, and addiction disorders.

Sexual Dysfunction, Schizophrenia/Psychotic, and Cognitive Disorders

  • Evaluate contemporary research associated with sexual dysfunction, schizophrenia/psychotic, and cognitive disorders.
  • Describe the DSM IV-TR symptoms/criteria for sexual dysfunction, schizophrenia/psychotic, and cognitive disorders.
  • Assess a variety of treatment modalities for sexual dysfunction, schizophrenia/psychotic, and cognitive disorders.

Childhood and Adolescent Disorders

  • Evaluate contemporary research associated with childhood and adolescent disorders.
  • Describe the DSM IV-TR symptoms/criteria for childhood and adolescent disorders.
