This course covers the psychology of the adolescent from a historical point of view to present day societal influences and pressures. Current trends and methods of learning in adolescent education will also be covered.

Adolescents in Social and Theoretical Context

  • Examine various definitions and markers of adolescence.
  • Examine how changes in society affect adolescents.
  • Examine major theories of adolescence.

Growth and Development Tasks of Adolescents

  • Describe physical development of adolescent sexuality.
  • Identify the role that body image plays in adolescence.

Cognitive Development of Adolescence

  • Analyze adolescence as a time of major cognitive development.
  • Examine methods of assessing cognition.

Psychosocial and Social Development

  • Examine how self-concept affects adolescence.
  • Examine the relationship of adolescents and their families.
  • Examine the impact and influence of peers and peer relationships.

Psychosocial Issues Facing Adolescents

  • Identify factors affecting school achievement.
  • Analyze behaviors of adolescents who suffer from alienation.
  • Examine the impact that substance abuse has on an adolescent.
